hot kicks: UES

Easily spotted with their chains, studs and buckles, Upper Echelon Shoes have made a splash.

The founders, Seth Campbell and Nick Cohen, call the concept "shoewelry:" the brilliant idea of wearing your bling on your feet.

While expensive, these kicks will always get you noticed.

look alike: studded wallet

Studs are one of my favorite trends this season. It's the perfect embellishment to toughen up any look. These wallets are the perfect addition to an ultra-feminine look.

These looks are almost identical, but the blue wallet costs about a tenth of the price.

look alike: NYE dress

I'm the kind of person who uses New Year's Eve to my full advantage: it's my excuse to wear an outrageous dress that might be retired to my closet for the rest of the year. For this reason (and because I'm a poor college student) my budget can't exceed $150. This year I started shopping with one rule: if it doesn't sparkle, it's not my dress. Inspired by a gorgeous (but too expensive) dress from topshop, I went looking for a less expensive version. Here's what I found:

Sequins make everything better...especially these tees and tanks! A little sparkle makes these tops okay to wear out for day or night. Pair with a pair of jeans for day and layer with a chic blazer and amazon heels for night.

does your chain hang low?

You don't have to be a gangsta to enjoy this trend. Big gold and silver chain necklaces are a hot trend that can spice up any look. Try pairing these accessories with a feminine look for a tough edge.

Not ready to commit to this look? Try a chain bracelet.

all that glitters: the sequin mini

This is one of my absolute favorite looks for fall and winter! Paired with a solid color long sleeve top, sheer black tights, and booties, these skirts make any outfit pop.

To avoid looking gaudy look for a skirt that comes about four to five inches above the knee. Avoid sequin prints (like leopard) but go for a simple pattern (like stripes or checkers). These skirts act as their own accessory; don't overdo it with tons of jewelry or a big bag. Stick to stud earrings and a simple black clutch.

For a sophisticated going out look try matching your sequin mini with an black one-arm, long sleeve top.

vivacious velvet

I was hesitant on this one too. But don't let flashbacks of plaid and velvet Christmas dresses (circa 5-years-old) hold you back from this trend. Velvet will transform any outfit into a rich, luxe look.

Try to go for dark colors: plum, chocolate, burgundy or emerald.

Still uneasy about it? Start small--find a dress with a velvet band or a pair of velvet shoes. Also try layering a velvet tank under a blazer or sweater.

Pretty Little Things

Embrace the balmy summer weather in a beautiful, lightweight knits. Think white linen and cuts that flow away from your skin. Not tan enough yet? Go for pastels (lavender, faded tangerine, and a flush of pink).
This look is perfect for a day at the pool and a night out to dinner with friends. Embrace your feminine side with faint floral prints and subtle details and embellishments.
Pair this look with a skinny belt, your favorite worn-in jeans, or a pair of t-straps.

Fashion on a Budget

Not many people have the budget to buy a whole new wardrobe this year. And with warm weather quickly approaching, many of us want to rush out to the mall to pick up the newest trends. There are several things you should keep in mind before blowing four months worth of pay checks on trends that may go out of season by next month.

1. Establish a realistic budget: Set aside a certain amount of cash before you go to the mall and don't allow yourself to go over. Be realistic and make sure you get the essentials before you pick up the latest trends.

2. Splurge on timeless pieces: It's always tempting to spend a fortune on the newest fad, but these should be the pieces you spend the least on. Trends come and go, but classics (i.e. black dress, dress pants, denim, and neutral accessories and shoes) are here to stay. Plan to spend at least 1/2 your budget on these items.

3. Always look for a cheaper version of a hot trend and don't buy the designer version unless you have to have it. Although you may have to wait a few weeks for the trend to trickle down to department stores and stores like Forever21, it's definitely worth the wait. At the time, it may seem like a good idea to buy the designer version, but always think ahead and ask yourself if you think you'll wear it in six months.

4. Don't shop with a shopaholic: When you shop with a friend who can easily drop $500 in one store, it's never a good idea. This can increase the pressure to spend more and be more impulsive. The best people to take: your mom or just yourself. Your mom will be brutally honest with you and keep you in line budget-wise.

5. Shop online: Now is the perfect time to shop online for sales and deals. Many stores have begun offering free or discounted shipping and online deals you can't find in stores. Websites like www.bluefly.com and www.ruelala.com that can help you find amazing deals on designer goods.

6. If you're not sure, come back: If you're insanely indecisive like me, you may need to take a break before you make a big (or small) purchase. If I can't decide if I want to buy something, I'll either move on to the next store and come back later, or return later in the week. I can usually rationalize whether or not it's a good purchase after I've had some time to think. Go home and make sure you don't have anything too similar and that you can wear the item with your wardrobe.

7. Look for transitional pieces: before you commit to something, make sure you'll be able to wear it for longer than a few weeks. Pieces that can be worn in the summer and then worn with a cardigan in the fall are more valuable. You don't have to be able to wear the piece all year round, but think about upcoming seasons and weather when you consider your purchases.
